Briefing: State of Civic Life at CPS

Saturday, November 7, 2020 - 10:00am

How is civics education changing in a time of COVID-19, systemic racism, and challenges to our democratic institutions? Plan to hear from Heather Cerny Benthuyen at our November Briefing.

Benthuyen serves families and students of Chicago as Director of Social Science and Civic Engagement for Chicago Public Schools, with over 20 years’ experience as a youth advocate, teacher, instructional coach, speaker, and professional learning provider. She believes in a 360-degree approach to civic learning—that every student should have a voice in classroom and school visioning and decision-making, and every school stakeholder has a role in preparing young people as powerful civic actors.

Benthuyen is a National Board-Certified educator and holds an MA in Educational Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University and an Illinois type 75 General Administrative Certificate. She was named Civic Learning Laureate for the Teaching Channel.
